I've made this piece for the Marine Island matte painting contest over at CGChallenges.org One of my friends, who happens to be a writer, gave me a description of a location in his novel. I've drawn several sketches on paper, then made a tonal sketch and started matte painting. I've worked mostly in Photoshop but I also used Maya for the architecture and Mudbox for some details.
